Madoanji Temple

Temples associated with the Asakura clan

Founded during the Yōrō era of the Nara period by the great master Taichō, this Tendai sect temple was originally located in Nojiri, Ikeda Town. It was relocated to its present site in Fuchū, Echizen, in 1533 (Tenshō 2) by order of the Asakura clan of Ichijōdani. Passing through the mountain gate, stone statues of Fudō Myōō and Jizō Bosatsu stand side by side on the left. The halo of the Jizō Bosatsu bears the inscription "December 4, 1560 (Eiroku 3, Kōshin year), Respectfully offered by the donor." As it shares the same style as the stone Buddha in Ichijōdani, it is also thought to have been created with ties to the Asakura clan. The Hara-kago Fudō Myōō enshrined in the Fudō Hall features a sheath statue from the early Edo period and a principal image within the sheath from the Muromachi period, both designated as city cultural properties. Additionally, within a shrine on the temple grounds stands a memorial stupa for Asakura Kagemitsu, who sided with Oda Nobunaga during his invasion of Echizen.
