Soanji Temple

A Temple associated with the Asakura clan

Founded during the Yoro era (717-724) of the Nara period by the great master Taicho, this Tendai sect temple was originally located in Nojiri, Ikeda Town. It was relocated to its present site in Fuchu, Echizen, in 1533 (Tensho 2) by order of the Asakura clan of Ichijodani. Passing through the mountain gate, stone statues of Fudo Myo and Jizo Bosatsu stand side by side on the left. The halo of the Jizo Bosatsu bears the inscription: "December 4, 1560 (Eiroku 3, Koshin year), Respectfully offered by the donor." As it shares the same style as the stone Buddha in Ichijodani, it is also thought to have been created with ties to the Asakura clan. The Fudo Myo enshrined in the Fudo Hall features a sheath statue from the early Edo period of 1603-1868 and a principal image within the statue dating to the Muromachi period (1336-1573); both are designated as city cultural properties. Additionally, within a shrine on the temple grounds stands a memorial stupa for Asakura Kagemitsu, who sided with Oda Nobunaga during his invasion of Echizen.
