Enkyūji Temple
Core Temple of the Echizen Ikkō Ikki
An ancient temple with a thousand-year history. In 1472, under the teachings of Rennyo Shonin, it converted from the Tendai sect to Jodo Shinshu. In 1575, during Oda Nobunaga's campaign against the Echizen Ikkō uprising, Enkyūji's chief priest Ryokan fought as commander of the Takebu rebel forces against Nobunaga's army and was defeated. The Otani branch of Jōdo Shinshū holds an annual event where a portrait of Rennyo Shōnin is placed in a palanquin and carried on foot between Higashi Honganji Temple in Kyoto and Yoshizaki Gobo in Awara City, Fukui Prefecture. On May 3rd, during the journey from Yoshizaki to Kyoto, the palanquin stays overnight at Enkūji Temple. Within the temple grounds stands a rare, large three-needled pine tree.
