Kawasosan Hoshunji Temple

A temple with the oldest Matsuo Basho haiku monument in the prefecture within its grounds

This temple enshrines Dainichi Nyorai as its principal image and is the only temple in Echizen City belonging to the Rinzai sect's Daitoku-ji school. A river flows right beside it, and since ancient times, worshippers would purify themselves in this river before visiting, leading to its name Kawasosan. Commonly called "Kawassan," it is said to bring blessings for safe childbirth and recovery from illness, attracting a constant stream of visitors. The main hall displays numerous old votive paintings and lanterns dedicated on talismans. Within the grounds stands the "Shikizuka" (poem monument) of Matsuo Basho, the master of haiku. This monument is the oldest of its kind in the prefecture.
