Kawatakayama Hōshunji Temple
A temple with the oldest Matsuo Basho haiku monument in the prefecture within its grounds
This temple enshrines Dainichi Nyorai as its principal object of worship and is the only temple in Echizen City belonging to the Rinzai sect's Daitoku-ji school. A river flows right beside it, and since ancient times, worshippers would purify themselves in this river before visiting, leading to its name Kawatsukuri. Commonly called "Kawassan," it is said to bring blessings for safe childbirth and recovery from illness, attracting a constant stream of visitors. The main hall is adorned with numerous old votive plaques, ema, and lanterns dedicated to the deity. Within the temple grounds stands the Shikizuka (poem monument) of Matsuo Basho, the master of haiku. This monument is the oldest of its kind in the prefecture.
