Fujino Gankuro Memorial Museum

The house where Lu Xun's benefactor, "Professor Fujino," lived in his later years

This memorial hall commemorates the sister city agreement signed in 1983 between Awara City (formerly Awara Town) and Shaoxing City in China's Zhejiang Province. The former residence of the Fujino family, located in Mikuni-cho, was donated by the family. It was relocated to the site adjacent to the Awara City Cultural Center in July 1984 (Showa 59), the 100th anniversary of the opening of Awara Hot Springs, and designated as the "Fujino Gankuro Memorial Hall." Subsequently, in 2011 (Heisei 23), it was relocated again to the Awara Onsen Yuno Machi Plaza, which was developed that same year.

After resigning from Sendai Medical College (now Tohoku University School of Medicine), where he had a teacher-student relationship with Zhou Shuren (Lu Xun) as a professor of anatomy, Fujino Gankuro primarily lived and practiced medicine as a physician in his birthplace, Honjo Village (present-day Awara City), practicing medicine. However, for the twelve years from 1933 until his death in 1945, he lived in this house in Mikuni with his wife Fumiko.

The many personal items on display in the memorial hall's archive room—books, medical instruments, letters, and more—are invaluable for understanding Fujino Kenkurō's character.

The "Fujino Gankuro Memorial Museum" is registered as a Tangible Cultural Property (Building).
