Omizu-Okuri "Water-Sending" Ritual

Shinto ritual to herald spring in Wakasa

Omizusuri, a Shinto ritual that heralds spring in Wakasa, is held every year on March 2.

Prior to the "Omizutori" held on March 12 at Nigatsudo Hall of Todaiji Temple in Nara, the "Omizusuri" at Jinguji Temple in Obama City, held on March 2, is a historical event that tells of the deep relationship between Nara and Wakasa that has existed since ancient times.

After the Omizutori in Nara, spring arrives. People in Kansai eagerly await this sign of spring every year. This Omizutori ("drawing of the "fragrant water" for the Shunikai ceremony) at the Nigatsudo Hall of Todaiji Temple in Nara is a nationally famous event, and the "fragrant water" is said to take 10 days to reach the "Wakasa well" of the Nigatsudo Hall of Todaiji Temple in Nara from the Wakasa Unose.

After purifying the water drawn from the "akaii" at the Wakasa Jinguji Temple in Obama through various rituals, the water is moved in a torchlight procession to a riverbed called Unose, about 2 km away from the Wakasa Jinguji Temple, while protecting the akaii water.

The torchlight procession, which continues for about 2 km, is very powerful. A large torch is held at the front of the procession, followed by hundreds of torches, creating a fantastic scene in the darkness of the winter night.

The fire and water festivities end with the pouring of incense into the flame-lit Unose no Enshiki River.

The incense is said to reach "Wakasai," a well in Todaiji's Nigatsudo Hall, and is pumped up during the "Omizutori" ceremony on the 12th.
