Shinmei Shrine (Kamisoja)

A place where people paid homage to Mount Hino and prayed for safe travels.

Shinmei Shrine is also known as Kamisoja Shrine.

During the Edo period, this site was known as a place for bowing in worship (fushio-gami) and was a spot for distant worship of Mount Hino, which was revered as the Mt. Fuji of Echizen (present-day northern Fukui Prefecture) and had long been a sacred mountain in mountain worship traditions.

Established during the reign of Emperor Keitai, the 26th emperor of Japan, it fell into disrepair during subsequent turbulent times and was rebuilt by feudal lord Honda Masacho during the Kanbun era (1661–1678). The enshrined deity is Amaterasu Omikami.
