Gekkō-ji Temple
A bronze Buddha statue enshrined to commemorate those who starved to death during the Great Famine of Tenpō
Upon entering the main hall, a magnificent, lustrous bronze Buddha statue immediately greets visitors. Standing approximately 5.5 meters tall from lotus pedestal to crown, it features a serene countenance. Erected in 1847 (Kōka 4), it was dedicated to commemorate those who perished during the great famine of the Tenpō era (1830–44). It is said that around 500 stones inscribed with the names of ancestors were found inside the Great Buddha. During the Edo period, this area was on the outskirts of Takefu town, and it is said that travelers would bid farewell here before setting off on their journeys. It is a nunnery temple, a branch temple of Inseki-ji, and also the third temple of the Takefu Thirty-Three Kannon pilgrimage.
