Fukui City Museum of Natural History

A museum gathering materials on Fukui's nature under one roof. Its permanent exhibition combines actual specimens, dioramas, and videos to clearly display Fukui Prefecture's natural environment and its formation. The rooftop observation deck and terrace offer panoramic views of the Fukui Plain. It also serves as the Asuwa Mountain Visitor Center.

  • A museum where you can enjoy learning about Fukui's natural history, gathering materials on Fukui's nature in one place. The permanent exhibition introduces the region's origins and nature through dioramas and quizzes. It's packed with information, including rocks from nature-rich Mt. Asuwa, actual specimens like ammonites, and introductions to enjoyable walking courses. In addition to special exhibitions held in spring and summer, the museum regularly hosts popular events for children, such as insect and plant specimen making workshops and observation sessions, as well as stargazing events.
  • Experience the vast universe up close! The rooftop observatory features an astronomical observatory hosting stargazing events themed around the moon, planets, and meteor showers. A high-performance refracting telescope with a 20cm diameter lens is installed, allowing observation of Jupiter's stripes and other celestial features—popular with adults as well as children. You can also enjoy the night view of Fukui City, including the illuminated cherry blossom trees.
  • A terrace with breathtaking views stretching to distant mountains For a view of Fukui City, the Hakusan Terrace on the 2nd floor is recommended. On clear days, you can see the distant Hakusan mountain range, and in spring, you can look down on the beautiful cherry blossom trees lining the Asuwa River. Known as the spot with the best view in Fukui City, you can enjoy the spectacular scenery while listening to the birds singing and insects chirping amidst the rich nature of Mount Asuwa.
