Karikomi Pond [Currently Closed to Traffic]
Karikomi Pond, located at the foot of Gankyoji Mountain in the upper reaches of the Uba River, is known for a legend that Master Taicho once divided and restrained a great serpent dwelling in Senjaga Pond on Mount Haku. Surrounded by primeval forests of beech and Japanese oak, this tranquil pond reflects Mount San-no-mine, one of the peaks of the Haku Mountain Range. Enveloped in a mystical atmosphere, it is one of the prefecture's premier spots for autumn foliage.
[Important] Regarding the Prefectural Road Leading to Karikomi Pond (Updated August 30, 2024)
Due to the large-scale disaster (slope collapse, collapse of Zengorō Bridge) that occurred in March 2023 and the impact of heavy rains in July, Prefectural Road 173 (Kamikoike-Katsuhara Line) connecting to Karikomi Pond is closed to traffic from Hatogayu. (Access to Hatogayu remains possible.)
As was the case last year, it will not be possible to reach Karikomi Pond via Prefectural Road 173 during this autumn's foliage season.
