In 2005, it was certified as "Japan's Clearest Starry Sky" by the "National Starry Sky Continuous Observation" program (conducted by the Ministry of the Environment and the Japan Environment Association).
Furthermore, the Minami-Rokushi area was certified by Dark Sky International as Japan's fourth "Starlight Reserve." It's close to the city, yet it's the first in Asia to be certified in the "Urban Night Sky Place" category, which recognizes areas with excellent night sky environmental protection!
