Saishōshōji Temple (Fujishima Castle Ruins)

Remains of Fujishima Castle, one of the seven castles of Asuwa during the Nanboku-chō period, still stand.

Chōshōji Temple was built on the site of Fujishima Castle from the Nanboku-chō period, and part of the castle's earthen ramparts remain within the grounds of Nishi-Chōshōji Temple.

Fujishima Castle is said to have been built by Shiba Takatsune, a military commander of the Northern Court, and is counted among the Seven Castles of Asuwa.

According to Volume 20 of the Taiheiki, the Southern Court general Nitta Yoshisada encountered forces of the Spā faction that had launched an attack from Kogoromaru Castle while en route to Fujishima Castle. He was defeated at Tōmyōji-nada. Nitta Yoshisada's body was taken to Ōjōin (present-day Shōnenji), while his head was sent to Kyoto.

Saichōshōji Temple is also the family temple of the Okakura clan of Fukui Domain, which produced Okakura Tenshin. It houses the graves of successive generations of the Okakura family and a monument inscribed "Grave of the Ancestors of Master Okakura."
