Goshoji Temple

The poet couple Tekkan and Akiko Yosano visited here and left behind fourteen poems, making this place famous.

Goshoji Temple, with its majestic red-tiled zomyo-style mountain gate, is the head temple of the Shinnyo-shu Izumoji sect.

Founded by Shinran Shonin in Kyoto's Izumoji region in the first year of Tenpuku (1254), it was relocated to its present site during the Keicho era (1596-1615).

The main hall boasts a grand structure measuring 20 ken (approx. 36 meters) on each side. The hollyhock crest and the single-block carved sculpture depicting carp swimming upstream at the Amida Hall gate are must-see sights.

The spacious grounds also feature a sutra repository and bell tower, all arranged in orderly fashion, naturally evoking a solemn mood.

In spring, cherry blossoms bloom like a sea of clouds, making this a hidden gem.
