Goryo Shrine
One piece of evidence that the Echizen Provincial Government was located here
The enshrined deity is Prince Sawara, the son of Emperor Kanmu. It is said that an imperial edict was issued to provincial governors nationwide to establish Goryo Shrines to appease the vengeful spirit of Prince Sawara, who was caught up in political strife and unjustly driven to his death. The presence of a Goryo Shrine, like the presence of a Sōja (central shrine) or Kokubunji (provincial temple), is considered evidence that a provincial capital once stood on that land.
