Shōkaku-ji Temple
The mountain gate was relocated from the main gate of Echizen Fuchu Castle.
This Jōdo-shū temple is a major temple with five sub-temples. It stands on the site of the former Shinshōkōji Castle, built during the Nanboku-chō period by Shiba (Ashikaga) Takatsune, the provincial governor of Echizen Province. The castle was burned down during the battle against Nitta Yoshisada in 1338 (Enbun 3). To mourn the spirits of the thousands who died in the war, Shōkaku-ji Temple was established in 1366 (Jōji 5). The current main hall was built in 1857 (Ansei 4). The mountain gate was relocated from the main gate of Fuchu Castle, the Edo-period residence of the Honda clan. Though not large at 5 meters high, it is unusual in that its roof is covered with stone tiles to prevent snow damage.
