Umeda Family Garden

An elegant garden reflecting the characteristics of the Kamakura and Muromachi periods

This garden is a “pond-viewing style landscape garden” that once belonged to the residence of the Umeda clan, a powerful local family in Ikeda Village. Descended from Taira no Yorimori, the Umeda family settled in this area following the Battles of Kurikara and Shinohara. It is an elegant garden that beautifully preserves the characteristics of the late Kamakura and Muromachi periods, allowing visitors to experience a sense of timeless beauty.
The garden consists of a forest-and-spring-style garden in the main eastern section and flat gardens to the south and west. Water is drawn from the rear and divided into two channels, cascading down a waterfall into the winding pond. Moss covers every corner of the garden, creating a serene and secluded landscape. Recognized as a valuable resource for understanding the spread of garden culture, it was designated a National Scenic Spot in 1977.

[Visiting Information] The garden is open to the public for approximately three days each in spring and fall. Visits by reservation are also available. (Note: The garden is closed during the winter.)
