Kongō-in
A temple filled with Buddha statues
Kongō-in Temple, exuding the simple atmosphere of a mountain temple, belongs to the Sōtō Zen sect. It was founded in 1433. In 1610, Honda Tomomasa relocated it to its current site, where the castle of the former feudal lord, Aoki Kii-no-kami, once stood. Within the temple grounds stands a Buddha Footprint Stone modeled after the sacred stone at Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya, India. It is said that touching it brings peace. Furthermore, during the annual "Mitama Festival" held on July 15th, monks walk while chanting sutras amidst the light of 6,000 candles, creating an ethereal and profound atmosphere.
