Ryusenji Temple

The family temple of the Honda clan, feudal lords of Fuchu

Ryusenji Temple, known as a training ground for the Soto Zen sect, features a quiet atmosphere with pine trees lining its approach. Founded in 1367 by Tsuugen Jaku-rei, it served as the family temple for the Honda clan, feudal lords of Fuchu (around present-day Echizen City), and houses the massive five-ringed stupa tombs of successive heads of the family, beginning with the first, Tomomasa. The varying sizes of the tombstones are interesting.

Tomomasa enjoyed the deep trust of Tokugawa Ieyasu. The temple also houses cultural properties such as wooden statues of Ieyasu, his son Hidetada, and Ieyasu's second son, Yuki Hideyasu.

It also stands on the site of an abandoned temple from the Hakuho period, with roof tiles and other artifacts from that era unearthed within the grounds.

It is the only temple in the prefecture where you can experience the Kaidan-meguri ritual.
