Ryusenji Temple
The family temple of the Honda clan, feudal lords of Fuchū
Ryusenji Temple, known as a training ground for the Soto Zen sect, features a quiet atmosphere with pine trees lining its approach. Founded in 1367 by Tsuugen Jaku-rei, it served as the family temple for the Honda clan, feudal lords of Fuchu. The grounds hold massive five-ringed stupa tombs for successive clan heads, beginning with the first, Tomomasa. The varying sizes of the tombstones are interesting. Tomomasa enjoyed the deep trust of Tokugawa Ieyasu. The temple also holds cultural properties such as wooden statues of Ieyasu, his son Hidetada, and Ieyasu's second son, Yuki Hideyasu. Furthermore, the site is the ruins of a temple from the Hakuho period, and tiles from that era have been excavated within the grounds.
