Zengonzan Koboji Temple
Murasaki Shikibu ーthe author of the Tale of Genji, believed to be one of the oldest novels in the worldー spent about a year and a half in Echizen City. Our temple is located adjacent to the east side of Murasaki Shikibu Park. It is a Shingon Buddhist temple, a rarity in the area.
First, signs featuring five characters associated with the Heian period of 794-1185, when Murasaki Shikibu lived, welcome visitors. Upon entering the temple grounds, you will find the Reijo Waterfall on your left; the area around it is embedded with sand from the 88 Sacred Sites of Shikoku, allowing visitors to perform the “100-step pilgrimage” by walking on the sand.
On the right is a meditation hall enshrining a seated statue of Shakyamuni Buddha, which was brought from Thailand.
The main hall enshrines the principal image of Kobo Daishi, as well as the secret Buddha of Zenko-ji, Fudo Myo-o, and the Kannon Bodhisattva who saves the souls of unborn children.
Group Worship Services: We offer a fun Dharma talk featuring the Heart Sutra and songs; please contact us for details.
